Folk Brittania: Nic Jones

Nic Jones was one of a group of musicians who were in the vanguard of the British folk revival in the late 60s and 70s. As his official site says

'An untimely car accident in February, 1982 abruptly ended his career and the legacy of the serious injuries he sustained is that Nic has not been able to work since.'

I can remember hearing Nic first on the John Peel show and loving his percussive guitar style (see also Davey Graham, Richard Thompson) and gravelly voice.

He was a strange omission from the recent BBC Folk Brittania shows and I rediscovered him due to the wonderful eMusic and his album Penguin Eggs.
The present story of his early albums is a controversial and convoluted one, and Nic doesn't recieve any royalties from them. So you are best advised to purchase Penguin Eggs and the two supurb home produced anthologies.

"In Search of Nic Jones"

and "Unearthed"

Both can be ordered here.

Just downloaded the Penguin Eggs album on Napster. Really great stuff, still sounds very fresh.

Hope you're still about and blogging, North Yorkshire blogs are thin on the ground !
